Coronado is located to the west of San Diego and is accessible by bus, bicycle, car and ferry. It is joined to the mainland by a scenic 2-mile bridge and also by a long narrow strip called the "Silver Strand" that leads south to Imperial Beach. The ferry runs between San Diego's Broadway Pier and Coronado's Ferry Landing several times throughout the day. The nearest airport, San Diego International Airport, is across the bay in San Diego.
The Coronado Unified School District offers residents an excellent choice of schools. There are two elementary schools, a middle school, a high school and an alternative school in the area. Strand Elementary School is known for personal attention to each student. The staff knows each student by their name and greets the parents as they drop kids off in the morning. Approximately 65% of the students are from the Navy housing nearby while the remaining 35% are from the neighboring communities. Village Elementary School is located in the heart of Coronado and has received the California Distinguished School award. This school strives to provide a rigorous academic program that is supported by high test scores. Coronado Middle School also boasts high academic standards for all of its students. Coronado High School has received several awards for academic excellence, including a California Distinguished School award in 1996 and the National Blue Ribbon School award in 1998. Coronado also offers an adult education center that teaches a variety of trades, as well as awarding high school diplomas to those who complete the required studies. There are a variety of colleges in the surrounding areas. The University of California at San Diego is located in La Jolla, while San Diego State University and the University of San Diego are both located in San Diego. The year-round leisure and recreational opportunities in Coronado are endless. There are numerous parks and stretches of pristine beaches. Tidelands Park is a sandy beach below the Coronado Bridge. It offers extensive children's playground equipment, bicycle/walking paths and a fitness course. Speckles Park is located between Sixth and Seventh streets on Orange Avenue. There are a variety of community events and picnics held there. The Glorietta Bay Beach is located south of the Hotel del Coronado and City Hall. This beach offers a unique view of the Bay and the San Diego-Coronado Bridge. There is a grass park area in addition to a small beach area. In addition to these, there are several other parks and beaches throughout Coronado. There are also areas where you can swim, surf, sail, bike, skate, golf, play tennis and even lawn bowl in this city. Coronado may be best known for the world-famous and historic Hotel del Coronado. This grand hotel is located at the south end of the city. The Del, as it also known, is a National Historic Landmark that dates back to 1888. The hotel has been host to a variety of world icons including Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra, as well as every President since Lyndon Johnson. The Hotel continues to attract guests from all over the world. There are two main shopping districts in Coronado - the Ferry Landing Marketplace on First Street and the Main Street boutiques in the downtown area. The shops in both of these locations offer both unique items and day-to-day necessities. Larger shopping facilities such as the University Town Center, Gaslamp Quarter and Horton Plaza are located nearby. There are 14 hotels within the city (three of which are world class resorts), 67 acclaimed restaurants, an 18-hole golf course, a public marina and two live theaters. The history of Coronado dates back nearly 200 years. In the early nineteenth century, whalers utilized Coronado as a safe harbor for hide houses. Over a period of 39 years, the peninsula changed hands many times. The founding fathers purchased and invested in the area and organized the Coronado Beach Company on April 7, 1886. From that moment on, they envisioned building a resort community. The dream has come to fruition over the years and Coronado has indeed become a resort destination where approximately two million visitors frequent each year. Coronado is very proud of its rich heritage, its vibrant community and its seaside village appeal. These features and others truly make this city an excellent place to live, work and play. |
